My father used to say that nothing succeeds like success. I’ve also heard the expression that nothing exceeds like excess. When it comes to celebrating successes a certain amount of balance is required.
Celebrating wins and acknowledging one’s accomplishments is a very important part of the process that I outline in my Simple 9 Step Marketing System for Sales Success. Let’s not be so understated …
For us understated Canadians, we often don’t want to draw attention to our accomplishments. But if we don’t who will?
There is a great quote I saw recently that says “IF YOU DONT’ CELEBRATE SUCCESS, IT WON’T CELEBRATE YOU!” by Julian Hall.
It’s important to acknowledge yourself, your colleagues and stakeholders that a major undertaking was successful. Partners appreciate the acknowledgement and recognition that comes with celebrations. Creating awareness of your success sets you up for future successes as well. When you share that you are successful, you become more appealing, which creates a winner’s aura. People want to work and align themselves with successful projects and people.
Public Relations Opportunity
Celebrating success also creates pubic relations and newsworthy stories. When I worked in Economic Development, I was fortunate enough to win awards. Most, if not all of the awards involved community projects. After we won the awards we would often issue a press release. Better yet we would hold a press event with our stakeholders to celebrate everybody’s contribution and to get the word out that what we were doing was of value.
On several occasions we would have duplicate awards made and we would present those awards to our major funders and or stakeholders.
I can tell you the celebrations helped build profile and credibility. Celebrating our stakeholders helped build relations and showed our appreciation for our partners. Sharing the actual awards with our funders and major stakeholders made them feel appreciated and set us up for future success the next time we needed their support.
Let’s not be so shy and humble
For my fellow Canadians, who may feel shy about celebrating your owns successes. Please figure a way to get over it. One way is to frame the celebration in such a way as to take the focus off of you and put the focus on your partners. Make it newsworthy. This could be as simple as putting the information in a company newsletter, you could blog about it and post it on social media.
I recommend going a step further and creating a communal event to share the celebration.
Host a gathering with the group or stakeholders that you worked with. Invite dignitaries and the media if you can. Make a big deal out of it. The quote above is a powerful reminder that those that feel appreciated will often go the extra mile for you. I don’t think ta=hat should be your motivation to acknowledge others, but it is a nice side benefit.
